Freddie's Flowers - fresh blooms delivered to your door
I don't know about you, but I love having a house with flowers in it. I like to think I'm marginally better at flower arranging than I am at gardening (lets face it, it wouldn't be hard). For the most part, and for convenience sake, I've bought my blooms at the supermarket along with my weekly shop, so the variety and range of flowers has necessarily been fairly limited and they don't last longer than a week at most, but they've always been lovely to have around.
So I was intrigued when I heard about a service that delivers not just a wide assortment of seasonal flowers in carefully selected combinations to your door, but also the instructions for how to arrange them.
I assumed they'd be wildly expensive, but Freddie's Flowers deliveries cost just ÂĢ22 each and come with a promise that they'll last up to two weeks. Which, if that were true, would mean they would work out cheaper than my weekly bunches of supermarket blooms, so I thought it was worth a try.
Setting up an account is delightfully straightforward, you can phone or do it on-line (the website address is at the end of this post). You choose a frequency of delivery, a day on which you want your flowers to arrive, and a place they can be left if you're not in. And lo, on the appointed date/day this is what arrives:
I realise it's stating the bleedin' obvious to say that your flowers are inside the box, but along with them are clear and wonderfully chatty instructions and tips on how to arrange them and make sure they last as long as possible, plus two sachets of their (apparently special) flower food to help them do just that.
Because the flowers are grown by the Freddie's team, they're really fresh, and often not yet fully open, giving them even more lasting power. And because the bunches are put together by experienced flower lovers, the combinations of colours and varieties are wonderfully stylish, attractive and original.
It isn't just the flowers that are delight, everything about the service Freddie's provides is a pleasure. I love most flowers but I can't bear lilies, so when I set up my account I called them to say I didn't want to have any arrangements that had lilies in them. They explained that there was no need for me to miss out, because if one of my deliveries was due to have lilies in it, they'd replace them for something else. Which is not only exactly what they do without fail, but this arrives with my delivery on those weeks.
Isn't that marvellous? I chose to have my deliveries every other week, and the flowers do, indeed, last pretty much all that time, and in some instances even longer. But I get a weekly email with a description of the flowers in that week's bunch, and if there's something I especially love (like peonies at this time of year), I just let them know I want that one as well.
In case you couldn't tell, I'm a big fan of this service and couldn't recommend it more highly. They deliver throughout the UK (but not further afield, I'm afraid. If you're reading this outside the UK, you'll have to settle for enjoying the arrangements vicariously. Sorry about that). Have a look at their terrific website and give them a go. And when you do, post your arrangement pics in the comments so we can all enjoy them!
