When I launched These Are The Heydays, I promised I wouldn’t recommend any product to you that I hadn’t first tried myself. Well extraordinary times call for, if not exactly extraordinary measures, certainly ones that are out of the ordinary.

For the first time, I’m suggesting you try a product that I haven’t first tested myself. At least not yet. But read on and I’m sure you’ll understand why.

Hand washing matters

Never before has it been more important for us to wash our hands as often and as thoroughly as possible. And I’m sure that never before has the skin on your hands been as dry as a result. If you’re anything like me, you’ve been using hand cream at almost the same rate as soap.

This week, thanks to two terrific accounts that I follow on Instagram - Angela Kennedy and That’s Not My Age - I heard about a very special hand cream.

Nursem was developed by husband and wife team, Jonny and Antonia, who is a paediatric nurse. If you think the hand washing we’re required to do is onerous, consider how many times a day a nurse has to wash their hands in order to keep their patients infection free - between 50 and 100, in case you were wondering. Unsurprisingly, it often leaves them with sore, cracked and bleeding hands and can even lead to them having to take time off work. And that’s in normal times.

Wanting to do something to tackle this problem, Jonny and Antonia spent 7 years developing a natural, effective hand cream that nurses could use to relieve their beleaguered skin.

Already widely used and loved by nurses, midwives and health care workers, last year Jonny and Antonia launched their range (which now includes a hand wash) to the wider public, making it available on-line and at Boots where it started selling as quickly as it could be restocked.

But there’s something that makes Nursem even more special, especially right now.

True to their mission to help nurses as much as possible, Jonny and Antonia pledged that for every product they sold, they would give a month’s supply to a nurse or midwife. And to date they’ve done exactly that for 21,330 of them. Their aim is that by 2025 they will be providing free hand cream to every nurse and midwife in the country.

So you can see why I wanted to tell you about this as soon as I heard about it. I’ve ordered two tubes from the Nursem website, where there’s also an excellent video showing you exactly how to wash your hands properly, as well as information on their new initiative, #handsupfornurses, which aims to provide hand cream to an extra 10,000 nurses and healthcare workers via nominations from the public for our healthcare heroes. Find out how to nominate someone by clicking here.

In these worrying times, anything we can do to help the people who are working so hard to take care of us is a no-brainer as far as I’m concerned. That buying Nursem hand cream will help me a little too, is just a bonus.
